Do note that the proposed algorithm is not perfect: if the domain in the address is a subdomain of the tested_domain, it won't be recognized as such, the local resolver will be queried and it will fail.

A possible improvment would be:

if is_substring (domain, tested_domain) then

But then it would fail in cases where there is a zone cut between domain and tested_domain. It is not so uncommon: mail.example.com may be delegated, in order to use a load balancer.

In that case, the only perfect solution would be for Zonecheck to implement a full resolver, to follow the delegation. Probably too heavy.

If a domain is changing its NS to a new set, Zonecheck may fail with the hostmaster email test if the old mail server has been disconfigured and if old info is in the cache.

This is because Zonecheck asks its local resolver, not the future NS (which may not be recursive).

I suggest the following algorithm:

(local, domain) = split(address)
if domain == tested_domain then
ask_mx(domain, nameservers)
else
ask_mx(domain) # Uses the local resolver
