That is very weird. I'm developing Straw on Debian unstable, and that is definitely a problem with your PyXML installation.
First of all, do you have the package python2.2-xml installed?
If you have, see the file /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/_xmlplus/sax/saxutils.py .
Can you find a line starting with "class DefaultHandler" there? It's an empty class which just inherits from four others.
What does the $Id line say? My version is
$Id: saxutils.py,v 1.31 2002/06/30 07:52:50 loewis Exp $

The package version is 0.8-2.1.

And last thing, just to make sure that the import lines import what they should: start python2.2, and do this:

>>> from xml.sax import saxutils
>>> saxutils

<module 'xml.sax.saxutils' from '/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/_xmlplus/sax/saxutils.pyc'>

Do you get the same output?
