This documented behavior works around a problem with apache
fop. The inline documentation for write_ledger_to_pdf()
explains it, and marks it for inclusion in the user manual
that will eventually be written. Would you prefer to get
an explicit warning--a messagebox, for example?

Does this cause an actual problem? For instance, when you
print all cells in a census, is it necessary for each to
have a unique filename? If so, then unique filenames could
be formed from a datestamp: see unique_filepath(). Should
every output filename be unique, or would a user who
modifies and reruns a case be surprised if the original
output weren't overwritten, even with a portable filename?
Primum non nocere.

Or is this merely surprising? If so, then you're welcome
to propose a behavior that's less surprising in every case.
Simply removing all characters that are nonportable in the
boost::filesystem::::portable_name() sense would map names
like "x y z z y" and "! x y z z y !" to the same string, and
"!@#$" and "%^&*" to an empty string. Replacing a surprise
with a subtler one that might have lower frequency but
higher severity is not good practice.

'File' | 'New' | 'Illustration' [or 'Census'] | 'OK'
'Save as' "Let me illustrate" | 'Print preview'

These files are created in /fop-0.20.5 :
output.xml
output.pdf
Instead, the two output files should named with the
original "Let me illustrate" filename and appropriate
extension.

Repeat the commands above with a different filename that
still has embedded spaces. The first output.* files are
overlayed with the newly created ones, and with the same
incorrect filenames:
output.xml
output.pdf
