Sorry, I didn't realize this -- the calls to getopt() looked so much like C functions that I got confused. There is no problem then , thank you.

I'm surprised by your third point. It shouldn't matter whether
or not ms provides getopt, because lmi provides a complete,
standalone implementation in 'getopt.?pp'. This has always
worked fine with MinGW gcc, which uses the msvc C rtl. Legacy
versions of lmi worked with borland tools as well, even though
borland neither provides getopt nor uses the ms rtl.

Opening this bug just to keep track of issues which may prevent lmi from building with MSVC:

1. automake support is poor: debugging doesn't seem to be supported, but it does work, more or less
2. update configure to include msvc/wx/setup.h for cl: then we don't need to worry about the libraries
3. getopt() usage in main_cli.cpp is a problem: there is no getopt() in MSVC CRT
