This has been implemented, but only for "any ARP traffic not directed to us". For ARP traffic directed at us, we must both respond and possible send queued packets, which is impossible in the current architecture.

Using the architecture where ARP sends link layer packets itself (by Martin Glunz) this can be fully implemented. So, the remainder of this now depends on task #1612.

There is a subtle issue to take care of: if an ARP entry is pending, with a packet queued in the entry, once a remote ARP request for our IP address is issued, we should send an ARP reply as well as send the queued packet. This cannot be done, as the etharp_arp_input() can only return 1 packet.

The suggestion is to only update an ARP entry using remote ARP requests only if we do not have to reply to that particular ARP request.

Feature request to support updating the ARP cache using incoming ARP requests. From "TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1 - Stevens": "A little known fact of the ARP protocol is that if a host receives an ARP request from an IP address that is already in the receiver's ARP cache, then that cache entry is updated with the sender's Ethernet address from the ARP request."
