Thank you that work very nicely.

I was able to reproduce the bug with quilt 0.42 using the same vfat options you are using. The problem is in the backup-files binary. Using quilt 0.43 or later, it works just fine. I guess you're using 0.42? Is so, upgrade to 0.44 or (preferably) 0.45, that should fix it.

I suspect the following change to have fixed that bug:
- lib/backup-files.c: Don't fail when link(1) returns ENOSYS, and
try to copy in that case.
http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/quilt/lib/backup-files.c?root=quilt&r1=1.21&r2=1.22
There are so many differences in lib/backup-files.c between 0.42 and 0.43 that it could be another change though.

the partition is mounted as vfat with
vfat uid=500,gid=500,defaults 0 0

kernel version 2.6.9-1.667

I have attached the output of the trace when I add the file. I don't think I have a problem with files beginning with a dot because when I add the file manually under the .pc directory it seems to work fine.

Kernel version? What options did you use when mounting your fat32 partition? I couldn't reproduce the problem here.

I seem to remember that some fat implementations don't like file names beginning with a dot. You could try to set QUILT_PC=_pc, either in your ~/.quiltrc file or your environment (before running any quilt command in your working repository), and see if it helps.

It it doesn't help, please use the --trace option for the failing command and report the output.

bug #16327

Here is the exact error I get when using quilt on a fat32 partition

quilt add tmp.txt
.pc/test/tmp.txt: No such file or directory
Failed to back up file tmp.txt

I fixed the problem by manually adding the file to .pc/test/

Does anyone know why this happens

when I do quilt add foo.txt I get an error saying .pc/foo.txt doesn't exist.

Then when I modify the file and check the patch, it contains the entire file rather than the changes made to the file.

When I repeat the same steps in an ext3 partition it works great.

Any suggestions as to what might be the problem.

Thanks
