Chris Jepeway notes that this problem was fixed in version

This might have been a problem for an earlier version of the
code, but I don't see any problem with 'map_write()' in the
current CVS edition.

It's really map_write() that does it.
You'll run into the problem if you msh
an archive with a .map file where the
archive contains > MAXFILES worth of messages.
