This is a known bug of bash 3.1:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-bash/2006-01/msg00033.html

It is fixed by patch bash31-010. Search for a bash package update for your distribution.

I just added a check in quilt's configure script to spot this bug so that users are aware about the problem and update bash when needed.

Using quilt 0.45 with Fedora Core 5 (x86_64) fails with error message about unterminated sed command. Using
quilt mail --mbox .. -trace
shows:

+++ sed -n -e '/^$/q' -e 's/^Subject:[' ']*//ip' /tmp/quilt_mail.zL3660
sed: -e expression #2, char 12: unterminated `s' command
++ '[' -z '' ']'
++ '[' -z '' ']'
++ printf 'Introduction has no subject header (saved as %s)\n' /tmp/quilt_mail.zL3660
Introduction has no subject header (saved as /tmp/quilt_mail.zL3660)
++ exit 1
+ rm -rf /tmp/quilt_mail.eX3513

Looks like the quotes in the sed argument aren't being escaped properly.
