this tool is very primitive and does not even properly report syntax errors (with an exit status etc)

Evaluate pyflakes to integrate through a wrapper script (make test) to check for all python files in the source tree and report errors.

Python is an interpreted language. Instead of waiting for the bug to appear at run time, we should try and catch them during build time.
