Not at all, IMO. Just re-normalize. If the user forgets to do so, it will clip, but that's the users problem. He will always be able to boost the gain until clipping occurs. So what!

Re-normalize? Think of normalizing as 'calculating the optimum gain'. That doesn't mean it must not be changed anymore. What's the point in normalizing and then changing the gain? It won't be normalized anymore. To me two competing gain values seem rather confusing. With one gain value, a normalize function which sets this value to +X dB will always normalize the clip. If I change the gain afterwards, normalizing again really does normalize it again.

But this will be on the track level, right? So it will be an overlay, just as track gain is at the moment.
