I have the same problem, but it's not limited to alsa-xmms, aplay also exposes said artifacts. This behaviour started with kernel 2.6.14 which uses a new version of alsa-driver iirc. I tried getting around it by also installing the other updated alsa-* packages, as well as xmms-alsa (I use Gentoo, dmix, and a Creative Labs Extigy with snd_usb_audio driver), but it didn't help.

Another interesting new "feature" I noticed, is when I seek forwards or backwards in xmms, I can hear the song at least twice at the same time (it gets louder when seeking). Also, if I use the tonegen plugin to tune my ukulele, when switching between the tones, I hear both tones at the same time for a short time. It's very weird...

I have tried changing the buffer from 700 to 7000, and the period between 1 and 250 (and uncovered another bug, posted). Doesn't seem to make a difference.

If I bring the period to 1, I still (subjectively less frequently) get the garbage at the beginning (after hitting play), but it's reduced to no more than an extremely brief click. Same with hitting stop -- garbage, but only a little bit, just a click.

Did you try tweaking the period time setting in the 'advanced settings' tab?

Aplay does not exhibit this, AFAI can tell. It doesn't always seem to happen. I'd say it happens about 60% of the time. The noise that plays right after I hit play seems to be the sound that was playing (perhaps about to play?) right before I hit the stop button.

So I hit stop right in the middle of some percussion, then tap play, and I hear a tiny bit of the drum noise before the beginning of the song starts playing.

Do you encounter that noise with other pure alsa players like aplay or alsaplayer?

I hear a pop or noise for a very short period of time when I hit stop, and frequently hear the same thing when I hit play. This does not happen with the xmms OSS driver combined with ALSA using OSS emulation. It happens both with and without mmap.
