Message count and "consider new mail as read" action added in 5.0-RC1.

Thanks for this detailed clarification.

I would actually like two of the features listed below:

1) Being able to click on the envelope icon to tell Mail Notification that the messages it has already seen should be considered read.

2) Displaying the count of unread messages.

My use case is just like that of the original poster: I look at the pop-up and decide to ignore that e-mail message. Later I notice the icon and I have no way of knowing if there is new mail. I get enough mail that the notification icon is essentially useless to me in its current form, since it is always there.

About 1): this could be bound to middle mouse by default, so that it doesn't need to be configured.

About 2): all the mail notification programs I've used display a count, so I think this is a really commonly desired feature.

xbuffy supports both. The count shown is always the total count. If the user clicks on it to say to ignore the current messages, the count doesn't change, but it is dimmed until a new message comes in.

I've changed my mind. I might actually add a "Consider messages as read" icon action and menu item, or implement one of the alternatives described below.

I've finally decided that doing nothing was the best way to handle this corner-case scenario (adding user interface elements has a price).

That is perfectly clear. I also sometimes experience that scenario. However I need to think carefully before adding a new UI control (the preferences dialog is already crowded). Possible alternatives include:

- changing the opacity of the icon according to the time that has elapsed since the latest message was received
- printing a message count on top of or next to the icon
- printing the time that has elapsed since the latest message was received on top of or next to the icon
- considering that this scenario is not worth adding complexity to the interface (doing nothing)

I'll think about it.

I'd like another possible action when clicking on the status icon, which would consider all the mails known to mailnotify as read (i.e. forget about them) independently of the actual mailbox status.

Scenario:
1. The notification icon appears, telling me I have new mails.
2. I look at the popup to see what are these mails, and decide they are not important enough to interrupt my work now (maybe it's some spam).
3. The icon stays there in the notification area, and I have no way to easily decide if actually new mail has arrived since the last time I checked. If some important mail arrives later, I can't know it by just looking at the notification area.

Currently, the only thing I can do is to fire my mail-reader and/or go to my gmail account to mark all the mails as read (and not forget to actually deal with them later), and force mailnotify to update its state so that it will go back to the "nothing to see" state. This is time-consuming and breaks the flow.

The new option I propose would allow me to tell mailnotify "I acknowledge these mails, but although they are not marked "read" in the mailbox(es), consider them as "old", and only notify me when new mail arrives" (not sure this is clear).
