Such an update would be useless in most cases, so I will not add it. Instead you should save the following script and set it as your GNOME mail reader:

#!/bin/sh
evolution
mail-notification -u

Btw: if you use the Evolution mailbox type you will have immediate feedback (the mail icon will disappear as soon as you read a mail in Evolution).

It would be nice that when the single click action is set to start the email app, that the applet waits for the mail app to die and then immediately perform an update again.

In my workflow, I click on the notification to launch evolution. I read my email, close evolution, and then I manually tell the notification applet to update. (Even though I have it set to check every minute, if I don't update, I inevitably click on the applet again!)

The applet could simply register to receive a SIGCHLD signal to trigger an update check.
