Yes, 5 minutes is the default value and is fine.

You're probably right; I set mine relatively low, just because. Would something like 5 minutes be sufficient, do you think? (By the way, thanks for your prompt replies and for m-n; I didn't say "thanks"! :)

The error message is displayed in the tooltip of the blinking icon. I suspect your check interval is too small (IIRC Gmail rejects requests when they are issued too often).

I should mention that I turned "Blink on errors" off because it would blink sometimes. (Gosh, I feel stupid!) So I guess my terminal question is really: "How do I determine what the error is?"

Yes, I had turned that off; shall I turn it on and see what's going on? Also, would it help to run m-n from a terminal?

Is the "Blink on errors" setting (in the "Status Icon" tab) disabled?

Yes, I get a message, then the mail icon appears, then, at some point later, disappears. Once it disappears, when it checks again, it acts as if I just got a new message.
I'm monitoring a GMail mailbox.

Indeed, that's the normal behaviour. Do you mean that messages disappear without you reading them? Which mailbox(es) are you monitoring?

When presenting a new message, m-n should appear in the system tray and run any command set. After presented, it should remain until the message is read. It should only run set commands when a new message is presented.
However, what I'm noticing is that m-n will appear, run the commands, and then disappear again. If I set a command to play a sound (e.g. `aplay myfile.wav`), this means that the sound will play repeatedly (each time the message is re-presented), even if no additional messages are added.
Basically, m-n should have a "memory" of what it presented already and take more appropriate action when re-checking the mailbox.
