FYI, disabling accessibility features with gnome-at-properties works around the problem

Maybe this one:

Sat 03 Mar 2007 08:27:51 AM UTC, original submission:

mail-notification stopped working in the Fedora development tree after a new version of at-spi got integrated. The bug was tracked here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=227828

After discussing this with a Red Hat / Gnome developer it seems that there is something wrong in mail-notification that gets triggered by the new at-spi. Quoting some parts of above bug report:

[...]You should call

g_thread_init (NULL)
gdk_threads_init ();
GDK_THREADS_ENTER();

first thing in your program. Calling GDK_THREADS_ENTER() after
gnome_program_init() is too late, since gnome_program_init is making gtk calls.

[...]the a11y stack is now assuming that it is always called under the GDK lock.

The GDK threads documentation has always recommended taking the GDK lock right after gdk_threads_init().

This bug will probably show up in other distributions soon as well.
