I have this problem as well, on Arch Linux, the game has been installed via Pacman, from community repository.
I've also tried to get the source tarball and compile it with -g flag, to try and find the error, but that binary, compiled from sources by myself, doesn't crash at all (not for this reason, at least). The version is the same: 0.8.23.
This makes me think that config files aren't related to this (if you need to see mines, just ask).
A friend of mine, who has Arch too (thus the same versions of libraries, kernel and stuff), has installed Glob2 (still from Arch repositories) and he hasn't this problem.
This is the error message it prints before "crashing" (well, it doesn't seem a real crash):
glob2: Game.cpp:1539: void Game::drawPointBar(int, int, Game::BarOrientation, int, int, Uint8, Uint8, Uint8, int): Assertion `maxLength<65536' failed.

I'm a Windows 2000 user, and the game crash when I do what you say : on A Big Pond against two Numbis, I place one war flag immediately, set its range to 8 then placing a new war flag. What info do you need ? I join my preferences.txt file.

I can reproduce the bug in Custom Game "Playground" with 7 AINumbis (default).
I'm on WIN XP SP2, Glob2 Alpha 23.
Although sometimes it does not crash after placing a new war flag, most of the times after placing one, extending the range to 8, then placing a new war flag will crash the game.

No need for the apologies.
Unfortenetly I can't reproduce this bug on my windows service pack 2 system. I went into A Big Pond, and immeddiettly plaed one war flag, set it to range 8, then placed another war flag. The program did not crash.
I will thus need more specific information, such as your preferences.txt, what map you did this on, and how early in the game you can do this to cause the crash. If you can reproduce the crash on A Big Pong vs two Numbis by placing the flag immeddiettly after starting the game, then the bug lies in your preferences, and we will need to see them (YOG password removed).

Basically, it seems to happen whenever I place a War Flag somewhere on the map and increase its Range setting to 8 (Maximum) and then while that one is still there, I click back into the regular buildings tab and then into the flags tab again, and place another War Flag and the program crashes. I tested it seems to randomly crash when placed so I do not know if it matters if the flags are placed in the "Fog of War" or not, or any combination of explored terrain and Fog of War. The main thing i know is it almost always crashes when I first place a War Flag with range 8 anywhere on the map and then place another War Flag right after that seemingly anywhere.
My Operating System is Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
I do not beleive the current messages dispalyed on the screen have anything to do with the crash occurence as far as I know.
The crash has occured in the campaign and during a local multiplayer game I was playing against some computers.
Reproducing the bug is quite easy, as described above 99% of the time Globulation 2 crashes immediately after you first place a War Flag with range of 8 and then a War Flag with any range directly afterwards. (It probably crashes if you wait awhile too) Sometimes if you destroy the first War Flag before placing the second one the crash doesn't occur.
Sorry if this isn't enough information but I tried to follow your guide and did everything I understood how to do. At the very least, you have pretty easy instructions on how to reproduce this bug multiple times for testing very quickly. Sorry also if this has been reported but i briefly skimmed the list of reported bugs and didn't see this listed. (What did the box below all this mean when it says to attach files? hope I didn't need to do that...)
Well thats pretty much it...I have no idea if you make the credits for submitting a legitimate bug or anything and I'm not really seeking self-gratification but if you throw me in there put me down as Aaron Jensen. Thanks =)
