on my box P3-450 running SuSE 8.0) the core does that even without a gui.

When a gui is connected to the core, the core will eat up all the available memory. Even when the gui is ended, the core still holds all the memory. (Guess theres some memory allocated at the end of the heap that is not freed and blocks anything before it to be freed)
