Glad to hear it works now, but still wondering what made it fail ...

Anyway, I'll go ahead and close this, but I'll keep my eyes open in case something similar happens again.

Thanks for the report and your patience. Wish I could have really helped.

I tried the latest official release... It didn't help...
Thanx for you help. I'll wait for the next release - maybe the problem solves by itself.

There is one last thing you could try. Instead of using SDL.dll that comes with Waste's Edge, use the official release from the SDL website:

http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.12-win32.zip

I checked that it is compatible (but I can't tell whether it makes a difference in your case).

Unless I manage to somehow recreate the problem (not likely in the near future as I only have Windows 2000 around), it'll remain a mystery. I had a friend test it on XP though and it works for him.

Might be related to the graphics or sound card driver, DirectX, etc ... hard to tell :-(.

Sorry!

Files stdout.txt and stderr.txt are present but do not contain anything.
I tried to run Wesnoth, and it worked pretty nice. But I have old version... SDL libs from Wesnoth didn't help - they are raising "entry point in blabla not found"...

When starting, it should create the files stdout.txt and stderr.txt. Are they present and contain any error messages?

If they are not present, it might be a problem with loading the SDL.dll. Did you try any other games using SDL before? Did those work?

I played with FullScreen parameter in the first case ) Unfortunately, it doesn't help at all.
It doesn't even tries to change resolution, and even doesn't create a window...
P.S. Waste's Edge

This might be a known issue with the fullscreen mode. Could you try with fullscreen turned off and report if the error persists?

To do so, edit adonthell.xml (if it was the v0.4 alpha you were trying) or adonthell.ini for the Waste's Edge demo. In the first case, there is a parameter called Fullscreen, in latter it's called Screen-mode. Set it to 0 and try again.

If that works, it is indeed the fullscreen problem. I've seen that once before and think it is caused by SDL being unable to switch to a 640x480 resolution. I haven't seen it on any of my own windows boxes, so I wasn't able to determine if it is a bug in SDL or improper use of SDL from our own code. But I'll have a look at the SDL mailing list to see, if the problem is known to them.
