That's correct. However, this should be configurable with
fontconfig or something similar so that bitmaps aren't used
for this particular font.

Note that for many CJK fonts it is desirable to always use
embedded bitmaps at certain small sizes; with other words, the
decision whether to use or not use bitmap fonts has to be done
on a per-font level.

I've got cambria.ttc from PowerPointViewer.exe
Gnome font viewer reports its version 1.02

ftdiff shows me following picture:

It looks like autohinting and light autohinting use embedded bitmaps.

The same problem exists with calibri.ttf, bold versions of these fonts and Vista version of these fonts.

Ubuntu Gutsy
Ubuntu Feisty with freetype patch from mlind http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=343670
