MN selects the mailbox with the IMAP EXAMINE command. Here is what RFC 3501 has to say about it:

"The EXAMINE command is identical to SELECT and returns the same output; however, the selected mailbox is identified as read-only. No changes to the permanent state of the mailbox, including per-user state, are permitted; in particular, EXAMINE MUST NOT cause messages to lose the \Recent flag."

If you want to convince yourself that this is not a MN issue, you can run "mail-notification -i" and look at the IMAP session transcript. You will see that MN does nothing evil to the mailbox.

So, either this is a server issue or another IMAP client is the culprit (maybe your "xbiff"). Note that I also use Dovecot for my tests and I have never encountered the behaviour described here.

I run mail-notification to watch one mailbox from several computers, including a laptop. I use IMAP (dovecot) for remote access.

What happens is that it marks all emails that it has not seen, as UNREAD, even though they are read. Typically it happens when a laptop comes online.

This is really annoying.

The other thing that it does is it touches the mailbox in a way that makes xbiff think that the mail was read.

I would really like, myself, to see mail-notification to NEVER touch the mailbox other than gently read it (maybe even resetting last read time on the inode, if possible, I know it may not be possible with IMAP).

But specifically I do not want it to mark read email as unread.

Is there some setting that I am overlooking?

thanks
