What you want must be done by yourself, namely to adjust
the gamma correction. Please look up the freetype and
freetype-devel mailing lists; IIRC, this topic appeared
a few times in the last years. If you need further help
you should subscribe to freetype-devel and repeat your
questions there.

While FT looks very nice I work with reversed colors (white on black) -- with anything (AA or hinting) turned on text immediately looks too thin and hard to read.

Please improve this -- do not assume the text is darker then the background.
