dvdrecord was piece of software that was created by
looking at the cdrecord -V output while writing DVDs. It appeared a few weeks after the first cdrecord version with DVD support was released to the public and dvdrecoed was given up aprox. 6 months later.

In other words it was engineered by looking at what cdrecord does.

As the author of the code did not understand all the SCSI commands, the SCSI commands that read e.g. the parameters from the media have been omitted in "dvdrecord", even though cdrecord supported the related code since it's first version with DVD support in February 1998.

I recommend to just use the original code that is available with cdrecord.

The problem is that DVDs don't have an ATIP area.
There is something comparable in DVDs, but since the standard is not public (and I don't have access to it), it's hard to find or parse.

Any information on the DVD ATIP would be greatly welcomed.

dvdrecord -atip

should return a
free blocks:        2298496
or a lead out value or something similar for
writing software to pickup and use without having
to start a burn to find out it was too big for the
media.
