absolutely irrelevant now.

if my cursor freezes just because the game stopped, this is a bug.

it even is more than a minor bug. in this bt you just can't distinguish between severity and importance. a crash bug on win95 is severe. it just isn't important. explorers flying half the speed at one spot than the other is a bug. it just isn't severe like a crash.

hi Kieran

please don't mix things here! generally giving grafix and physics different threads would mean to interpolate between physics states to get a smooth grafix at t other than 1, 2, 3 ...

The cursor is completely unrelated to the physics and can be displayed without the need of any interpolation (like the standard cursor does).

Still it is not trivial within the system as is as drawing the stack of layers doesn't allow to remove the cursor layer and draw it somewhere else.

To achieve this, I guess we would have to first render the scene to a frame buffer and then render this+cursor on each update of the cursor.

At first sight this would mean a lot of work for little improvement. On the other hand this would allow for very nice other visual improvements like:

  • smooth movement of the scene if we put some overlap in the frame buffer (now movement is limited to steps of tile-size)
  • we could have nice zoom effects. if you press space to get to an event you see it zoomed 200% scaling to 100% in 10 steps
  • we could even play with subwindows. if player0 presses m (mark a spot) those receiving it get the spot displayed at 25% the size with the view of the sender for 4s. either as snapshot or the live scene on fast systems. clicking it will bring their view to the marked spot. (attached a pic)

I believe there was talk about this a few weeks back (giving graphics its own thread and such) and the decision was too much work, not enough payoff, or something along those lines.

as there is no separation of game physics and grafix (what the custom cursor is part of) except for when in pause mode the custom cursor suffers from laggy games, too. This is not really acceptable and caused me to never use it.
