You can use Esc then space to do same action as Meta+space (possible as well with all other Meta keys).
Today, you can customize key in script if you have problems.
In future, keys may be customizable in this script.

Or in xterm opened under gnome. alt-space is set to open window menu, so the key command never gets to weechat.
