In the CVS, the behaviour of list::append was restored, so that with

foo_list L;
foo value;
foo_list res = L->append(value);

does not return L anymore, but the Consfoo_list term that has value as a subphylum (and Nilfoo_list as the other subphylum).

The rationale for changing it back is that implementing parent links can be done efficiently with

res->gen_parent()

since res is the only node whose subphyla got new parent nodes.

Notice that the obvious application of returning L (chained calls) continues to work

L->append(value1)->append(value2);
