Reason for using $(value ...) is given in the ChangeLog file, date 2007-12-06:

Pass options from one configure script to another as-is
(not expanded). This is needed for options like
--includedir='${prefix}/include'.

Indeed, $(value ...) has been introduced in GNU make 3.80. I wasn't aware of that, and I've updated the documentation accordingly. I have also implemented a check whether a too old version of GNU make is used.

Please test.

So, perhaps it's caused by an old version of gnumake, and not by an old shell. Xcode 1.5 for Panther has gnumake 3.79 while Xcode 2.5 for Tiger has gnumake 3.80.

This bug is affecting Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) users as well. FreeType 2.3.5 passed configure arguments from configure to builds/unix/configure just fine, but 2.3.6 and 2.3.7 do not. There is no problem for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard) users. This is the MacPorts Project's bug for this issue:

http://trac.macports.org/ticket/15807

The shell on Panther is:

GNU bash, version 2.05b.0(1)-release (powerpc-apple-darwin7.0)
Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

The shell on Tiger is:

GNU bash, version 2.05b.0(1)-release (powerpc-apple-darwin8.0)
Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

(This is curious since my Tiger machine is Intel, not PowerPC.)

The file you attached, file #15981, did not fix the issue on Panther. But reverting the changes to builds/unix/detect.mk that were made between 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 did. Diff attached. I didn't understand what this change in 2.3.6 was meant to do.

I think I've found the problem. Please try the attached version of the top-level configure script.

Im afraid we're stuck with this shell for legacy reasons

Humm, thinking again I believe it's not related to the configure script at all -- the error appears before it is called.

So it seems to be a shell problem. Perhaps you can try a different one?

If I enter your command line, I get this:

...
cd builds/unix; \
./configure '--cache-file=cross-config.cache' \
'--prefix=/opt/env/base/i386/i386-linux/usr' \
'--build=i386-linux' \
'--host=i386-linux' \
'--target=i386-linux' \
'--x-includes=/opt/env/base/i386/i386-linux/usr/X11R6/include' \
'--x-libraries=/opt/env/base/i386/i386-linux/usr/X11R6/lib'
configure: creating cache cross-config.cache
...

So it seems that the configure script itself (this is, as genererated with the autoconf tool) is broken. In case you have time to further investigate I suggest to contact the autoconf people so that this tool can be fixed.

Redhat 7.0 (the very old one, I know)
GNU bash, version 2.05a.0(1)-release (i686-pc-linux-gnu)

Its an old system, but required for certain build characteristics.

No errors are reported

PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/env/base/i386/bin

The exact command run is:

LD=i386-linux-ld CC=i386-linux-gcc CXX=i386-linux-g++ \
./configure --cache-file=cross-config.cache --prefix=/opt/env/base/i386/i386-linux/usr --build=i386-linux --host=i386-linux --target=i386-linux --x-includes=/opt/env/base/i386/i386-linux/usr/X11R6/include --x-libraries=/opt/env/base/i386/i386-linux/usr/X11R6/lib

The output is:

FreeType build system -- automatic system detection

The following settings are used:

platform unix
compiler i386-linux-gcc
configuration directory ./builds/unix
configuration rules ./builds/unix/unix.mk

If this does not correspond to your system or settings please remove the file
`config.mk' from this directory then read the INSTALL file for help.

Otherwise, simply type `make' again to build the library,
or `make refdoc' to build the API reference (the latter needs python).

done.
cd builds/unix; ./configure
...

This is a cross-compiler (though obviously it shouldn't make a difference).

I have worked around this for now by running your ./configure and then cd into builds/unix and running a second configure. This works and sets everything up correctly, however I am happy to work with you on the problem till it is resolved.

Something must be broken on your system. Please give more details: Which platform? Which shell?

Fri 20 Jun 2008 08:57:38 AM UTC, original submission:

The root level configure script ignores any commandline options that should be passed to configure

For example:

./configure --prefix=/path/to/the/correct/install/location

is changed to just cd builds/unix;./configure

Expected behaviour:

All commandline optoins are passed to ./configure in the builds/unix directory

Documentation does not refer to this being a problem, or a way to force the options through, thus I can only conclude it is a bug.

Version is 2.3.6
