Invoking an automatic newline only when there is actually something to print fixes the problem with screen (and probably others, too).

When I run "screen" in avatarsay and then start a screen oriented program, the output is garbled. There are many superfluous newlines in the output.

The program "screen" doesn't seem to send any unsupported escape-sequences, so there must be a bug in the existing code.
