This is correct behaviour. Similar to afm2tfm, the raw base font doesn't contain kerning data. You have to generate a virtual font to get them (together with ligatures).

This is documented in the man page, BTW. See options -v or -V.

hi all,

i'm not really sure if this is a bug or misconfiguration at my side, but when i do

> ttf2tfm times.ttf times.tfm


with my freetype 1.4_pre20080316 for the very standard Times New Roman (attached), the .tfm-file would not contain any kerning information (nor ligatures, either). this is verified by looking at the output of

> tftopl times.tfm


the original ttf, however, contains a kerning table that can be extracted by

> ttx times.ttf


(of http://sourceforge.net/projects/fonttools/) for example.
