I sorted it out - no idea how, to be honest, but using webmin I kept updating the clock to copy from software time to hardware time as UTC/local, and back again, several times, and at some point it eventually all fell into step. Odd, as the rest of the system was aware, so it wasn't just a hardware issue, but it's sorted out now. Thanks.

PictureFrame just gets its time from the GNUstep framework. Maybe you could check what time zone GNUstep thinks it is? (perhaps by compiling and running the test file nstimezone.m in gnustep-base/Testing (I could send this to you if you want).

The clock is an hour behind the rest of the computer. The gentoo computer knows it's British Summer Time, but PictureFrame doesn't - and it displays a clock that's exactly an hour wrong - exactly, to the minute! Makes a mockery of a clock.
