This was a tricky bug. The problem was that the AI stacks move around without any army units grouped within the stack. The code that checks to see if a stack is flying only takes grouped army units into account -- and because there are none "grouped" it presumes that there aren't any grounded army units, therefore it's a flying stack.

I wouldn't be surprised if this kind of bug popped up again somewhere else.

Fixed in svn. Thanks!

This is just a note to myself.
It isn't always an error to have a stack stranded in the middle of the water like this. Maybe a stack flew into the water, and then the hero dropped a flight-giving item into the water. Or maybe the dragon that was carrying a hero flies away.

I wonder how the original game handles this special case... particularly if the stranded army units automatically get put into a boat.

That being said, this stack has apparently behaved like it has a flight bonus when it does not.

I can confirm that the game isn't erroneously giving the stack a flying bonus, even though the stack is behaving as if it has a flying bonus.

I've located the stack in the saved-game file, and I can confirm that the hero doesn't have an item that allows the stack to fly.

Surprisingly none of the army units in the stack are marked as being in a ship, and the stack doesn't have a flying bonus. Strange stuff indeed!

Also, the computer player selentines is the "hard" ai player.

I've been watching the easy AI player move for 10 minutes on a map with a lot of mountains, and I haven't seen any faulty movement like you describe.

I can confidently say that this bug doesn't happen all the time on my system.

I've recently touched the code that the AI players use to plan movement to nearby targets. It could be that I've introduced an error.

I'd really like to have a way to reproduce this error -- like a saved game.

Never recognized something like this. Perhaps a hero and a (hidden) bat?
However, I'll pay attention on that when playing.

Does the bug happen with the easy ai or the hard ai player?

AI player moves stacks over mountains and water, ignoring that mountains are impassable for ground units and entering/leaving the water anywhere.
