I've attempted to balance the ruins in gameplay by adding a hint in the ruin report of the difficulty of the ruin's occupant.

To summarize, there is high pressure to explore ruins, yet, sooner or later your hero usually dies. This is kind of dissatisfying. Maybe a description that includes a hint on the difficulty would be helpful, so that you can sort the ruins into easy, medium, advanced.

1 and 2 can be addressed by making your own scenario in the scenario editor.
Double stack movement items are part of the game I'm cloning so I'm not about to remove them from the game.
Also, the original game allows 8 dragons as a reward. If the stack is "too strong", maybe there's a flaw in the battle calculations. Maybe the original game performs a check on giving a too powerful stack too early in the game, and possibly I could add a similar check. Luckily there's no such thing as the perfect stack, so a stack of 8 dragons is certainly beatable by another human player who knows what they're doing.
Maybe part of the answer is fewer ruins by default on generated maps.

I've spent a lot of time on number 3. On June 23, I made the ruins 8% easier to conquer.
I won't be adding a "are you sure?" dialog to ruin searching because the whole point is that you don't know what's in the ruin and you have to come prepared. Searching a ruin with a larger stack does increase your chances of survival.
I can make them easier to conquer if you think they're still too difficult even though your hero has a few other units with it.
WL2 had a sentence describing the ruin, and lordsawar doesn't have this yet. Perhaps this description can be what you're looking for in terms of an over-approximated rumor.

Opinion: I think the "ruins & artifacts" part of this game ruins the balance. A game can be pretty much decided in the first 5 rounds, if one stumbles across one of the following:

1. Artifacts that double movement should be substituted with artifacts that have a constant improvement. Or at least the double movement should not be expanded onto stack units. Or at least two artifacts of this kind should not combine (20 -> 40 -> 80 movement points with two double movement artifacts)

2. An allied stack of 8 dragons (or similar units) as a reward for searching a ruin is simply too powerful. With that you usually can conquer everything, especially early in the game.

3. The risk that your hero dies searching a ruin is too high. While that may be considered a counter-balance to 1. and 2., it is not. Instead strategy, the game turns into a lottery where you can either win it all or loose everything. I suggest that the player should get a chance to retreat, if the protector of a ruin seems too powerful. This could be a precise warning, e.g. "You have encountered a dragon. Do you want to proceed?" or could be an over-approximated rumor "It is said that these ruins are protected by a dragon" which then might turn out to be a (giant) bat or the real deal. Also I had the impression that in Warlords I, searching ruins with a stack increased the chance of survival of your hero.
