James,

The ODE library version in hardy is 0.9.dfsg-1 and it is configured to use GIMPACT for collision detection. This was chosen due to a licensing issue with OPCODE (another collision detection library that can be used with ODE) which was resolved in version 0.10 of ODE. The problem is that GIMPACT does not work for 64bit architectures (which I assume yours is) so you either need to upgrade to intrepid or, at least, get the libode packages from intrepid. This shouldn't be a big prolem, just get the debs here:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/libode0debian1
http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/libode0-dev

and install them in one go with something like this:

sudo dpkg -i libode0debian1_0.9-1_amd64.deb libode0-dev_0.9-1_amd64.deb

They should install fine without any further dependencies if I'm not mistaken. Then clean, reconfigure and rebuild the sources and you should be done.

Please let me know if all goes well.
