we are very sorry about the late response.
glusterfs is a symlink to glusterfsd. glusterfsd is the executable binary of glusterfs.

Normally, a sysadmin should read that stuff first... before starting an installation.

there is no mention of using gmake in the documentation. I hesitate to offer the fix as my last documentation improvement was just reverted.

both, I'm testing on 3 linux machines and 1 FreeBSD machine.
however, I am using BSD make on FreeBSD.

/usr/local/lib/glusterfs/<version> is not cleaned by make uninstall.

make install gluster 1.3
make clean gluster 1.3
make install gluster 1.4
there are now two symlinks (glusterfs and glusterfsd) to each other in the bindir.
