"option mandate-attribute no" doesnt work for me.
I followed the "tla" instructions on the download page and compiled that version to test that as well.
Still no luck mounting NTFS directly. I still get "Extended attribute not supported, exiting"

config:
volume posix
type storage/posix
option mandate-attribute no
option directory /mnt/f
end-volume

Log:
2009-02-17 19:39:00 C [posix.c:3530:init] posix: Extended attribute not supported, exiting

GlusterFS does not support sub-mounts from an export directory. Infact, the latest code makes those files invisible from the mountpoint. Please make the sub mountpoints visible to glusterfs via seperate posix volumes.

"If we have another mount point inside the exported directory, we disable that path from access inside glusterfs ....".

Ok.. So my specific problem was not a bug, but since it DOES work when mounting /mnt/ then cd'ing to /mnt/ntfs, thats a bug?

Actually on my specific test-setup i have

/mnt/ (ext3)
/mnt/c (ntfs)
/mnt/f (ntfs)

What happens is, i mount the exported "/mnt/" using gluster fs.
i cd to /mnt/f/
i start mplayer on a movie. After a seemingly random number of minutes (usually more than 10-15) mplayer dies.

I then check what has happened by "ls -lah /mnt/". Now it gets really odd:

/mnt/c is "disconnected" or "removed" (indicated by a red color in my 'ls' output) and i cannot cd into it.
/mnt/f is STILL there but now it contains the content of /mnt/c, fully browsable and i can open files from /mnt/f that are actually on /mnt/c.

This is reproducible.

hi Dan,
To use a filesystem which doesn't support extended attribute as backend you need to provide 'option mandate-attribute no' in posix volume definition.

We mandate attribute support because both 'replicate' and 'distribute' translators use them to work properly.

If we have another mount point inside the exported directory, we disable that path from access inside glusterfs as there is a high chance of getting the same inode number for two different files, which will end up corrupting file's data.

Amar

Running ubuntu Intrepid. Self-compiled version of gluster 2.0.0rc1

/mnt = ext3
/mnt/ntfs = ntfs

volume posix
type storage/posix
option directory /mnt/ntfs
end-volume

glusterfsd refuses to start.

Log:
"C [posix.c:3604:init] brick: Extended attribute not supported, exiting"

Indirect access can be done though:
volume posix
type storage/posix
option directory /mnt/
end-volume

glusterfsd starts up fine and i can now cd ./ntfs and view my files.

One more thing. Though it works fine indirectly, every file i access is logged to the server log with the following line:
"W [posix.c:274:posix_lookup] posix: /ntfs/whatever.txt: different mountpoint/device, returning ENOENT"
