Because I fixed it. Joel's comment (#1) exactly described
the problem, and I fixed it in CVS. So you first have to
cvs update, obviously, and then follow my comments.

Jörg,
please don't get me wrong, but I don't understand your comment. I tried the -with_bfd argument with or without avr as last part of the directory structure and BOTH did not work. It looks like that the name I entered as a value to this parameter is left trimmed or not used - so this parameter is not working as expected.

On a second machine with a X86-libbfd installed it builds using the x86 components. This leads to the questions:

Why is the problem closed?
What is this parameter used for? If libbfd-x86 can be used it should be installed like gcc has to be installed and no need to gamble with a parameter ;-)

Joel's suspicion was correct.

Btw., Knut, in order for the option to work in your
environment, you'd have to specify it as
--with-bfd=/usr/local/avr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/avr.
Note that on Linux systems, this is normally not needed
at all. Just install a libbfd.a together withs its
matching bfd.h into your base system. There's absolutely
no need for it to be configured for an AVR target: only
basic ELF file access functionality is used from that
library.

Knut.. I am busy this weekend with a personal commitment so can't try this.

When I dropped -path from the argument name, I wonder if the variable changed name also. autoconf would have generated that
variable name I think. Can you look at the macros in m4 and
try that.
