I suppose the work around for Heiko's use case is to break your backups into separate pieces. The important backup can exclude all the less important files/folders and maintain greater history. The less important backup can exclude the more important files and contain less history.

The use case of "some large unimportant file was accidentally backed up and I want to purge it from the backups without losing other history" is still a problem and I don't see a work around for that.

Andrew's patch sounds like it would solve both problems more elegantly.

It's been a few months since the last comment. Is the patch likely to be added in the near future? I'm keen to try out this feature.

Hi Hew,

Josh Nisly has been working on a patch to make --remove-older-than work with --include/--exclude so that you can exactly specify which subdirectories and files you want to remove. The patch is in pretty good shape, and can probably be added to the development branch in the next few weeks.

best,
Andrew

It would be nice if rdiff-backup allowed --remove-older-than to work on subdirectories, rather than just the root backup directory. This would allow a greater level of control over what increment data inhabits the finite amount of disk space available.

For example, I would prefer to keep a long history of the changes to some important documents which have a relatively small size, and be able to remove old backups of large media files or redundant .trash folders. Every byte is not equal :-)
