I've been using Robert Timm's attiny87 config (file #26889) for a while, and it has been working well for me. I think it would make sense to include these in the distribution.

Based on the file that volkeru contributed, find attached the settings for the ATtiny87 device.

Here the necessary snippet for avrdude.conf

I can understand I'll not kill it but at the moment I've 2 parts that no longer respond after a few test with possibly false fuse bits... As I've only 5 engineering samples, I prefer to check things before I try

You can ignore the STK500 and AVR910 devcodes. (STK500 here
relates to the old STK500 version 1 firmware only.)

For the EEPROM parameters, just copy them over from a similar
device for a first try. The delay is documented in the
datasheet (4.0 ms). There is no readback algorithm, so just
fill in 0xff (as probably most other devices are doing).
The serial instructions are given in the datasheet, but you
can safely copy them from any other AVR with the same EEPROM
size. The mode/delay/blocksize/readsize parameters are the
STK500v2 parameters from the XML file.

Just give it a try! You won't kill your AVR if something is
wrong, but if you never try, you'll never succeed.

unfortunately, I'm not atmel & avrdude familiar enough to find out in .xml file the parameters. For example, where are STK500_devcode or for EEPROM I only have 512 value, no other information such as max_write_delay, readback_p1, readback_p2, read, write, mode, delay, blocksize, readsize...
I think I'll have now to forget eclipse environment for my dev. :-(

Yes, that would be an enhancement request.

The delay timing is listed in table 21-14 in the datasheet,
the serial instruction set (now in hex, used to be binary
there) in table 21-15.

Most parameters can also be found in the partdescription
XML file that ships as part of AVR Studio.

I'm not sure this i a bug, more an improvment request.
I'd like to use ATTiny167 with Eclipse and avr plugin, but avrdude is not yet compatible.
You provide in manual a tutorial to add new parts but some elements are difficult to get in datasheet (delays as eg) and how can we get signature or devicecode?
is it possible to get an update of that codes (at the moment from old AVR061 appnote), form ATMEL?
