As discussed, seems to be an issue with the ssl/cert infrastructure in [this particular] target environment,
closing as there's nothing I can think of that the elim
code base can do to fix/change this.

Interesting. Ok, for the certificate issue, I suggest you follow it up with the appropriate pidgin/libpurple support channel for your distro, there's more likely to be someone who knows what is going on.

As to the other issue, is there any chance I could have a temporary
shell to try and see what's going on? Regular account will be fine, no root required.

Let me know and I'll send my ssh public key.

Hm, I made clean && all, but now I can only connect to irc accounts. Even my oscar/ICQ account stopped working. This is the elim-debug output for my ICQ account:

(elim-call-client-handler connect "10" 0 ...)

received: function-response.connect (("status" . 0) ("value" ("account-uid" . 36198096) ("account-name" . "140319753") ("im-protocol" . "prpl-icq")))

input filter: -- no more sexps remaining --

sent: (function-call nil (connect ((id . "10"))) (alist nil (int ((name . "account-uid")) "36198096") (string ((name . "account-name")) "140319753") (string ((name . "im-protocol")) "prpl-icq")))

Still, I get no visual feedback. (This little animation...)

Ah, and the other thing: When I use pidgin compiled with --with-system-ssl-certs=/etc/ssl/certs and try to add my jabber account, I get the exactly same error message about the "Invalid certificate chain". So at least this is not elim's fault.

Odd. I just logged into ccc.de myself with the latest checkout,
built from scratch in a fresh instance of emacs.

I don't have anything to suggest other than maybe make clean && make and then restarting elim/garak, in case something needs to be rebuilt/restarted for some reason.

I've rebuilt libpurble with --with-system-ssl-certs=/etc/ssl/certs, but since your last change to elim, the connection with jabber doesn't work at all and so I cannot check if that was the problem. I click the account and say login. In elim-debug I get this output:

----------------------------------------
(elim-call-client-handler connect "6" 0 ...)

received: function-response.connect (("status" . 0) ("value" ("account-uid" . 30368464) ("account-name" . "tassilo80@jabber.ccc.de") ("im-protocol" . "prpl-jabber")))

input filter: -- no more sexps remaining --

sent: (function-call nil (connect ((id . "6"))) (alist nil (int ((name . "account-uid")) "30368464") (string ((name . "account-name")) "tassilo80@jabber.ccc.de") (string ((name . "im-protocol")) "prpl-jabber")))
----------------------------------------

But there's no feedback. No error like the cert one, no icon change, nothing...

As per IRC discussion, this appears to be a libpurple
build-time configuration issue: On debian at least libpurple
is configured with the system-wide CA location as well as
its own limited set of CAs, I suspect the problem is that this is not happening on your system.

Interesting. I signed up myself and I didn't get bounced.
What happens when you log in through another client?
Like pidgin or finch for example?

I have a Jabber account at jabber.ccc.de. Unfortunately, when trying to "Log in", I get:

+---------
SSL Certificate Error
Invalid certificate chain:
The certificate chain presented for jabber.ccc.de is not valid.:
[Ok]

How can I debug that further to provide some more informations?
