In a few places in the code base, there are calls to the variadic function protect(), whose argument list must be terminated by a null pointer, similar to the exec family of POSIX functions. The integer constant 0 is mistakenly used. On x86-64, this was found to cause a crash. On common 32 bit platforms, it works by fluke because the 0 of type int has the same width as a pointer, and the two types are passed the same way in a variable argument list.
