When using the inbuilt date instead of the system version, refreshing a patch gives the following:

“Unknown option: r”

`date -r` is used to check the mtime of a file, but the compat script doesn't implement it. This results in the patch file being invalid as it contains the syntax help for date instead of the mtime of the file.
