What you experience is a special feature of libtool,
the auxiliary package used to create the libraries. Since
libtool normally builds both a static library and a shared
version, it hides the compiler warnings during the second
call. Reason is that for the second call all compiler options
are exactly the same except the flags which make the compiler
create position independent code (PIC), and it rather confuses
the user if she sees all warnings twice.

I don't know whether this behaviour can be changed (honestly,
I can't see an immediate reason to do so); this would be a
question for the libtool people.

I must admit to not having checked this in the latest release, but last time I looked, freetype was hiding compiler warnings by redirecting them to /dev/null.

i.e

/opt/sunstudio12.1/bin/cc -I/export/home/drkirkby/sage/suncc/sage-4.1.1/spkg/build/freetype-2.3.5.p1/src/objs -I./builds/unix -I/export/home/drkirkby/sage/suncc/sage-4.1.1/spkg/build/freetype-2.3.5.p1/src/include -c -g -DFT_CONFIG_OPTION_SYSTEM_ZLIB "-DFT_CONFIG_CONFIG_H=<ftconfig.h>" -DFT2_BUILD_LIBRARY "-DFT_CONFIG_MODULES_H=<ftmodule.h>" -I/export/home/drkirkby/sage/suncc/sage-4.1.1/spkg/build/freetype-2.3.5.p1/src/src/pshinter /export/home/drkirkby/sage/suncc/sage-4.1.1/spkg/build/freetype-2.3.5.p1/src/src/pshinter/pshinter.c -o /export/home/drkirkby/sage/suncc/sage-4.1.1/spkg/build/freetype-2.3.5.p1/src/objs/pshinter.o >/dev/null 2>&1

I think this is a bad idea. You might not like the warnings, but it better to see them than to hide them.
