I've not heard of any yeeloong stability issues for a while, so I'm closing this bug. feel free to reopen it if there are still issues.

Adding the flags that our binutils requires fixed all the instability problems I had.  I was never able to duplicate this bug report, though, so I can't tell whether this particular problem is fixed.

lxo thinks this may be fixed by new linux build where he found some other place the binutils as loongson2f bug workaround flags need to be. Need to test.

Moved a copy of the system over to a standard with the yeeloong 160GB drive. Made a seperate partition mounted on /home/backup, and then did an:

rsync -PHAXphax --numeric-ids --delete-before \
--one-file-system / /home/backup

This caused a system lockup within a few minutes. So looks like only disk I/O is needed to cause this lockup, and using the vendor-supplied disk drive doesn't help.

It would be useful if someone else could repeat this test to verify.

On rms' machine, I can consistently produce a lockup (system freeze, no logs of why) by doing a rsync backup of a large number of files via the wired network interface. This has happened with all 2.6.3x builds including 2.6.32.2-libre-lemote. It does not happen with some 2.6.27 versions of linux, such as the 2.6.27.1 distributed by lemote with their "Loonux" GNU/Linux operating system.

People have told me that there were major disk i/o system changes between 2.6.27 and 2.6.32.

It is possible that this is another side effect of the hardware not working well with the 64GB SATA SLC SSD rms uses; it also seems to lose DMA access occasionally. I need to test the same operation from a yeeloong with the original factory disk.

Please add a comment to this ticket if you have also seen this behavior.
