Anyway it should detect the library when given hint with --with-libiconv-prefix
That's kind of a bug - just don't know where.

Ok, nailed the configure problem. On FreeBSD applications like gnokii are normally installed via the ports system which may change a couple of things like the configure script. Since this version was obtained from git and not installed the standard way (for FreeBSD) it failed. I worked around it this way:

env LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib" CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include ./configure

after which it builds and works without a problem.

Thanks for the help.

Jur.

Some googling reveals that it might be a problem with config.rpath file. Although it looks that we're using the same version, but can you make sure that you don't have config.rpath file different than one from https://ng.gnunet.org/svn/Extractor/config.rpath

Yes, that fixes it, I can send an sms okay now.

So, what's left is why iconv is not properly detected.

The issue about detecting text as UCS-2 instead of Default Alphabet should be fixed with
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnokii.git/commit/?id=7ffa43febb6e0d4c45c6d2614baaf1446e2d7f4a

Can you test it?

Look at the config logfile I posted in comment #10.

Can you show the config.log for that? That's not something that we coded, we're just using standard AM_ICONV macro.

That's the actual problem. I need to verify why it things it not an ASCII message.

> It looks like unicode support in 0.6.28 broke things.

I'm pretty aware of problems. That's we're fixing it right now.

> Using iconv is not more than a workaround,

It's not a workaround. It's a proper solution avoiding workarounds we had so far.

> there's still an internal issue with it.

I admit it. However we're progressing with it.

It appears that configure does not look in /usr/local, ever. Even specifying options to that path does'nt not work. In the end I make softlinks to the header and library files in /usr/lib and now it picks up iconv. But there's still a problem sending an sms:

Old version (which works):

It looks like unicode support in 0.6.28 broke things. Using iconv is not more than a workaround, there's still an internal issue with it.

And what's in config.log? It includes all problems from configure.

Fri 09 Apr 2010 05:27:22 PM UTC, comment #8:

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --with-libiconv-prefix=/usr/local --includedir=/usr/local/include

I already tried that. Reinstalled libiconv and iconv.h is in /usr/local/include.

Seems to be a configure issue.

Can you check in the config.log what is the problem with iconv detection? Maybe you need to add some paths with --with-libiconv-prefix or something?

Iconv is installed:

gnokii> pkg_info|grep iconv
libiconv-1.13.1_1 A character set conversion library

It does not appear to be picked up by configure.

Can you install libiconv? From the next release it will be a mandatory dependency. For now I can see that your build is without libiconv support.

I've done some minimal debugging, here's the output.

Unfortunately, I cannot do much with the core file. Could you please try to find the place it enounters a problem using instructions from http://wiki.gnokii.org/index.php/Segfault ?
