I've checked the code. The REMINDER is the default category. So in case when it is not specified as in your example it gets assigned. And indeed end date is ignored then.
Honestly I don't know what would be a good solution. Nokias apparently accept only a subset of potential vcals. Which means some kind of data loss every time when it includes more information the phone can handle...

Well originally it doesn't have any category that the phone understands, if i use a category that the phone understands then it works, otherwise the phone converts it into remainder which only has start time and olny used for the alarm. The only way for the phone to save the duration is to use the meeting type.
writing this works ok, saves as meeting

So it includes the DTSTART info. Just the category is incorrect. You say originally it is a "note"?

The debug log (normalin.txt) includes what gnokii was able to understand from kcontact file:
BEGIN:VEVENT
CREATED:20110127T093429Z
DTSTAMP:20110126T231444Z
UID:2d15d459-c49d-473d-a154-108e8919b0fd

DTEND;TZID=Europe/Tallinn:20110201T100000
TRANSP:OPAQUE
END:VEVENT
And it includes dates information and I can see it in the dump. Can you please show how does gnokii read back this calendar note?
The other problem I understood is that it converted the note into reminder, right?
One more question: is your libgnokii built with libical support?

What was the exact gnokii command that you used?

Thu 27 Jan 2011 09:59:11 AM UTC, comment #7:
ok I created some notes in the phone dumped the using --getcalendarnote (test.vcal) and wrote them back (testin.txt). that worked but wrote the events 2x, then created a note in korganizer (normal.ics) and wrote that (normalin.txt) it worked wrote the note but as a reminder type with no time info (normalout.txt)

The vcal file you have posted would be enough to reproduce the problem?

Wed 26 Jan 2011 11:28:17 PM UTC, comment #5:
I can confirm that writing calendarnotes works, but they are saved as reminder type which does not save any time information (DTSTART,DTEND), is this how it is supposed to work? any chance of implementing this?

That should be fixed now in the current git version.

Your phones don't support the same frames supported by earlier Series 40 so this bug can't be fixed unless we find out if different frames are needed or another protocol can be used.
The "unhandled frame" error is fixed in http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnokii.git/commit/?id=13febfa6c7843a30c10e2c620e9a9fcc09570fe6
The id for Nokia 6500c is added in http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnokii.git/commit/?id=2618d4d2d0a853e6b65497ee0dae1ffa0f0cd0df
For users those are mostly cosmetic changes but are the first steps to an eventual fix of your problems.

Thank you for submitting this bug report, however we need more information:
Changing group to "minor malfunction" because the --writecalendarnote command works for S40 3rd (Nokia 2700 classic is S40 5th).
If you get errors also for --writetodo please open another bug report with the relevant files (however --writetodo doesn't work with S40 3rd so it's less likely to be fixed).
