Ah ha -- Just as I suspected. The reason that your wireless works at all in deltah is because the kernel at http://aligunduz.org/gNewSense/ is new enough that its ath5k driver contains support for your card. The ath5k drivers in the stock deltah kernel (as well as the metad kernel) are too old to contain support for Atheros AR2425 used in the EeePC 701.

If you want to try out metad now you can start with a deltah install (with that newer kernel) and update your sources.list to metad and upgrade that way.

Alternatively, once metad is released a full-sized CD image will be available, just like with deltah. This will let you complete the install without a network connection. You can then proceed to replace the kernel with the one at http://aligunduz.org/gNewSense/ to make both your WiFi and ethernet work again.

My research seems to indicate that the version of ath5k included in the metad kernel is perhaps too old to include support for the Atheros AR2425 used in the EeePC 701. In fact, it looks like Debian's EeePC team has created a custom version of the Lenny installer with the stock Debian kernel, but their custom installer loads non-free software to make your wireless work with Lenny.

Since you say that your wireless works in deltah, what kernel are you using with deltah? The stock kernel or did you replace it?

As I told in the first post yes, atl2 needs a newer or a backported one (for example gnufs made one).

But this still doesn't explain why ath5k failed to connect to a network that I use with deltah.

Some more info on that:
- I dont get any thing in dmesg when i try to connect from the installation system.
- no changes to packets sent/recived in /proc/net/dev

IIRC atl2 requires a newer linux then we ship in metad.

what chipset is the ethernet?

As I was told on IRC it lacks drivers for the ethernet card, but I sadly could not use the wireless either to connect to my AP that was ~1m away (No crypto, Not hidden).
