Please look up the FontConfig documentation or ask on a fontconfig mailing list for help how to set up those fonts with forced auto hinting. Virtually all GNU/Linux distributions use this library for system wide font handling.

You are right, the major problem is with the embedded hinting, It displays properly on my Mac OS Computer, and it displays properly as well with FreeType ignoring default hinting and using auto hinting. The difference with autohinting is staggering, and quite like the results on OS X. Rendering the Text with Pango gives similar results.

What can I do to use this fonts properly on my Linux Computer, as I bought the Linotype Fonts CD long time ago? Is it Possible to add the fonts to a 'blacklist and only use the Forced Auto-Hinted versions?

Thanks,
Sebastian

The hinting in helvetica_lt.ttf is a joke. Look at the attached image: The few hinting instructions basically worsen the results, causing a great insymmetry in letter `O', for example. BTW, according to the font's `gasp' table, you should use B/W rendering up to 16ppem, which is as bad as anti-aliasing.

The same thing happens in the ultra-light version: The hints for `A', to take an example, basically don't do any horizontal hinting. This gives probably good results with ClearType (which virtually increases the horizontal resolution a lot), but cause bad rendering otherwise.

Have you verified that those fonts produce good results with the Windows rasterizer (which I really doubt)?

Please send me the fonts privately for further investigation.

When running Freetype 2.3.9 there are severe problems with the rendering of Helvetica Neue Light and Helvetica LT
The fonts display unaligned in the case of Helvetica LT, and there are severe hinting problems with the Helvetica Neue, None of which happen with Helvetica Neue LT Pro.

Helvetica Neue LT Pro displays properly, but on certain Applications, it displays incorrectly the range of weights it is available, which causes confusion.

Thanks,
Sebastian
