Read this:

If you then believe that the problem is still with the FreeType library itself, please reopen this issue (and check the bug database for a previous report) – and give precise details on the potential bug. In particular, you are lacking all details how your FreeType library is configured, especially whether native TrueType hinting has been activated.

In the attached image, note the "Drawbacks and Concerns" sub-head which has fuzzy edges. Also, note below this the smaller fonts are clean and non-fuzzy. Note the bowl of the lowercase "e" in both samples. These are all DejaVu fonts, but this is symptomatic of all TrueType fonts.

It appears to be aggressively aligning the glyphs in such a way that they don't line up well with subpixels on screens. Shouldn't there be an option to fix these by moving them to match the pixel grid a little better? This behavior seems to be in effect in Windows Cleartype but not in MacOS X.

The option to preserves the clarity and readability of the glyphs when rendered to the screen as opposed to on paper ought to be implemented and optionally enabled.
