I knew why that happened. :-) That variable is used only once so you could just plug in the variable assignment where the variable is used and get rid of the temp. Or, wrap those lines in { } and put the variable where you had it. There are some places where we #if/#endif for a variable declaration or 2 which could be kept close to the code that uses the variable using { }.

Wow, that was fast. Thanks for checking this - I have to compile the lwIP source as C++ for my project which is why there was no compiler error for me (since C++ allows this kind of variable declaration).
