Rebuilding WeeChat fixes the problem, it seems.

well, sorry to have wasted your time but as it turns out weechat wasn't up to date in the repo's here at arch. ive upgraded to version 0.3.2-2 and weechat works fine now. sorry once again for wasting your time

here's the output of perl load/iset.pl
13:41:50 =!= | perl: not enough memory to parse file
13:42:02 =!= | perl: function "iset_signal_window_scrolled_cb" must return one valid value (0)
13:42:03 =!= | perl: function "iset_signal_window_scrolled_cb" must return one valid value (0)
13:42:03 =!= | perl: function "iset_signal_window_scrolled_cb" must return one valid value (0)
3:41:50 =!= | perl: function "weechat_perl_load_eval_file" must return one valid value (0)
seems the problem has been isolated now to that plugin and the perl package upgrade with arch linux. i'll go and report it there and keep things posted here as they progress for future reference.

So, according to your initial post here, I think it's problem with perl and iset.pl. After running WeeChat without scripts, can you try:
/perl load perl/iset.pl
Unfortunately, I have no way to test with perl 5.12.

ahh, that worked. here's a list of my scripts:
iset.pl
bufers.pl
hlpvitem.py
notify.py
urlbar.py
weeget.py

Another thing, for fast help, please join #weechat on irc.freenode.net.

Can you try:
weechat-curses -s
This will start WeeChat without script (works only with WeeChat >= 0.3.2). If that's ok, then I think problem is in a script and please give me list of scripts installed.

i'm sorry, i don't think i can help you any further with the gdb backtrace, can't find a file called core in my home directory.
and it is a crash. when i type 'weechat-curses' as a command in my terminal, i get this message in the terminal :
Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GtkWindow)
Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GtkInvisible)
Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GtkObject)
Undefined subroutine &main::buffers_signal_buffer called
weechat doesn't run at all.

Hi,
Is is crash (with crash message), or just perl errors displayed in core buffer?
If this is a crash, please report gdb's backtrace, like explained in doc: http://weechat.org/files/doc/stable/weechat_user.en.html#report_crashes

Tue 03 Aug 2010 11:41:15 AM UTC, original submission:
total program crash. i use arch linux 64 bit. i'm assuming that it's the perl upgrade thats caused this. error message when typing
'weechat-curses' in urxvt is :
- Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GtkWindow)
- Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GtkInvisible)
- Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GtkObject)
Undefined subroutine &main::buffers_signal_buffer called
and here's the output from core.weechat.log:
