Hmm...
Look avr-libc-user-manual-1.7.1.pdf:

In addition to the write functions there is a set of update ones. This functions read
each byte first and skip the burning if the old value is the same with new. The
scaning direction is from high address to low, to obtain quick return in common
cases.

Is this explanation not sufficient?

Which is the difference between "eeprom_write_XX" and "eeprom_update_XX"? It's not clear from this docu.
A short example would clarify this.

Does the "update"-function make a test of the data if it is different to the data in eeprom? If not, aborts the "update" the write-process or not?
